(Ed. Note: I was only able to catch the second half of this game since I had volunteered my time to a church co-ed flag football game at the request of a friend. If I can boast for a minute, though, I was basically the Latin Art Schlichter 1 in attendance. My team lost, [...]

Ohio State finally gets a QB in the 2009 class

Kenny Guiton
Ohio State apparently must really want to use a scholarship on a quarterback this season, in spite of being in good position for Devin Gardner and Braxton Miller in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The Buckeyes jumped all over Tajh Boyd after his scholarship offer was voided by the Volunteers before losing out to Clemson [...]

This day a year ago, I uploaded my first batch of YouTubes taken from the Illinois game. I remember all 3 of us here, back when it was more of a collaborative effort as opposed to just me doing everything, were mystified that Ohio State fans were left wanting for some great moments in Buckeye [...]

Decoding a Big Ten scheduling riddle
January 30, 2009 by feed · Leave a Comment
Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg
Several of you have e-mailed recently about Big Ten teams making the same trips or hosting the same opponents in conference play this coming fall as they did in 2008.
Examples:
- Northwestern visits Iowa for the second straight year in 2009
- Iowa visits Michigan State for the second straight year
- Penn State hosts Indiana for the second straight year
- Minnesota visits Ohio State for the second straight year
- Wisconsin visits Indiana for the second straight year
Purdue is the only team exempt from the repeats.
I contacted the Big Ten office about the scheduling situation today, and they said 2009 marks the start of a new scheduling rotation. Big Ten teams will play the same league opponents in 2009 and 2010 and have the same two byes, or no-plays.
Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman wrote in an e-mail: "Since this is the start of a new rotation, and new no-plays are rotating in and out of schedules, you might see a few matchups that are the same as 2008 [i.e. Iowa at Michigan State for a second straight year.] But those 2009 matchups will be reversed in 2010 and will be balanced over a four-year period. We do our best to avoid as many repeats as possible, but with 11 teams and two no-plays, it's difficult to always make that happen at the start of a new two-year rotation."
I hope this answers your questions.
With 11 teams, only eight league games, two no-plays and a bye week that doesn't fully take effect until 2010, the Big Ten schedule will never be perfect. Repeat games are hard to avoid in the current schedule structure, but thankfully it's not an every-year occurrence.
