Buckeye Anticipation

Walking around Columbus one week before September 5, you would think the boys in Scarlet in Gray had already taken to the field and we were in the middle of the season. People everywhere had their Buckeye hats and jersey’s on, young and old. From Westerville to Campus, Downtown folks to the hood, you can see it and smell it in the Columbus air. Don’t get me wrong, there’s never a bad time to wear Buckeye gear, but I’ve noticed the anticipation this past week has been about the Scarlet & Gray. So what is Buckeye anticipation?

Buckeye anticipation makes us go and buy up new Buckeye stuff because the old stuff just won’t do. I went to one of my favorite boutiques in the Short North called Tigertree and purchased a silver State of Ohio necklace. I plan to engrave it with my BucksInsider.com pen name: Bella Buckeye. One of the local news channels reported the must have jersey numbers this year are #2 Berry and #4 Pryor. So that means you may be “out of season” rocking your #33 Laurinaitis jersey.

Buckeye anticipation helps other causes. Kroger is running a special promotion to get Buckeye fans to Go Green by selling Ohio #45 Archie Griffin re-usable shopping bags for $1-$2. All proceeds go to the Feed the Hungry charity. Too bad you cannot find one in this city. I’m sure they are on ebay for 5 times the price. But at least you can rep your Buckeyes, be stylish and go green all at the same time. I’m all over it once I find one.

Buckeye anticipation will make a Michigan coach cry, eh Rodriguez? Nevermind the accusations of not playing nice in the weight room and on the practice field. I really think Coach Rich Rodriguez fought back tears and bit his bottom lip because he’s anticipating how exactly he’s going to get a win playing the Ohio State Buckeyes this season. I’d cry too if I left a great football program such as West Virginia to go to that team up North where they still play high school ball. I could go on, but that’ll be for a different article.

Buckeye Anticipation is 5,000+ fans at an OSU open football practice on an idle Monday night. The OSU Public Practice last Monday brought out many fans from all over. I noticed many families, lots of sons and fathers decked in their Scarlett & Gray. Fathers were often pointing to perfectly painted field showing their sons who Pryor is and describing what they doing between whistle blows. I noticed a few young college girls with full on make-up and Buckeye fitted Ts standing under the stadium lights just right hoping their lip gloss would catch a player’s eye. I can’t be mad at that. They are probably practicing for the night game against USC.

Buckeye Anticipation is Hyde Park in Downtown Columbus hanging a row of Buckeye flags on High Street. It’s Central Ohio households installing projection screens and buys HDTVs for the games. It’s the local news anchors talking about what scarlet and gray items they are going to sport on-air next weekend. It’s pulling out and dusting off corn-hole boards. It’s praying the weather is sunny on Saturday because you got tickets to the game.

Buckeye Anticipation is here, it’s been here. It ends Saturday, September 5 when the Ohio State Alumni TDBITL marches the field and the boys take to the field to kick it off with Navy and bring us the first win of the season. Are you ready?
