Ohio State Football: Urban Meyer Offers Mike Stoops Defensive Coordinator Job

Yesterday, recently terminated Arizona head coach Mike Stoops was offered the defensive coordinator position on Meyer’s new staff. According to sources, Stoops visited Columbus yesterday and is currently considering the offer. This would be Meyer’s biggest move as the head honcho at OSU thus far.

Stoops worked as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma under his brother, Bob Stoops, where his defense never finished below seventh in the nation. He’s also an Ohio native and knows the area well, which is a key in Meyer’s staff search.

At the age of 41, Stoops became Arizona’s youngest head coach since Larry Smith. After a few struggling seasons in Tuscon, the young coach was fired, but this doesn’t mean the guy can’t coach on the defensive side of the ball.

This same source noted that Stoops does have several head coaching offers from other schools and could even reunite with his brother at Oklahoma, but an offer is on the table to join Meyer’s staff. Don’t be surprised if Stoops jumps on the chance to focus solely on defense and return to his home state. He has recently been quoted as saying “being able to work with a guy like Urban Meyer would be exciting”

If Stoops does accept the job, Luke Fickell would most likely work under him as co-defensive coordinator and also work as the assistant head coach.

Only time will tell ,but this would be a huge grab for Meyer considering how successful Stoops has been as a defensive coordinator in the past.
