Time and Change: The changing of the OL – Ohio State (Rivals)

As a former offensive lineman for the Buckeyes and having relatives and friends that were linemen for other schools and NFL teams, I have wanted to give my thoughts about the state of offensive line play for quite some time.

Offensive line play has changed dramatically since the days of John Hicks.

Today offensive linemen average in the neighborhood of 300 pounds. In the late 1970s and 1980s a 270 pound lineman was considered ‘big; or at least good sized. ‘Good sized’ today is north of 330 pounds. The adage of ‘the older we get, the better we were’ does not apply here. We were tough back then, but today we would have a difficult time competing with today’s offensive lineman.
