    BRAXTON CLIMBS TOTAL OFFENSE CHARTS
    Braxton Miller had his fourth game this season – and fifth of his career – of 300-or-more yards of total offense with 313 yards vs. Nebraska. With 315 two weeks ago vs. Michigan State, Miller has had consecutive 300-yard games for the first time in his career. He is averaging 303.8 yards per game and 205.4 for his career. Miller has 3,697 total offensive yards, good for 15th place on Ohio State’s all-time charts. School records for season and career are 270.6 by Joe Germaine in 1998 and 185.2 by Terrelle Pryor, respectively.

    Nearing these career total offense totals:

    12. 4,414 by Cornelius Greene, 1972-75
    13. 4,158 by Rex Kern, 1968-70
    14. 3,768 by Eddie George, 1992-95
    15. 3,697 by Braxton Miller, 2011-12

    ANOTHER 100-YARD DAY FOR BRAXTON
    Braxton Miller now has seven 100-yard rushing days, by far an Ohio State quarterbacks record (Cornelius Greene had four and Terrelle Pryor officially three) and he needs just two more to rank 10th all-time at Ohio State in that category. Michael Wiley is ninth with 10 100-yard rushing games. Miller has 1,478 career rushing yards. Greene has the school record for quarterbacks with 2,080.

    BIG DAY FOR TIGHT ENDS
    The game started out just right for Ohio State tight ends Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett: they each started as the Buckeye coaches came out in a two-tight end look. And their day only got better. They helped block the way for 371 rushing yards and they combined for three catches for 83 yards. Heuerman had two-for-53, including an 18-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career. He also had a 35-yard gain, Vannett’s catch was for 32 yards.

    SHAZIER LEADS TACKLERS … AGAIN
    Ryan Shazier, third in the Big Ten with 59 tackles and fourth with 9.8 tackles per game, led the Buckeyes vs. the Huskers with 11 tackles. It was the fourth time this season and the sixth time in the last nine games dating to last year that Shazier has led in tackles. He has had 13 tackles twice this season – vs. Cal and UAB – and had a career-high 15 vs. Penn State last year.

    DEFENDING THE PASS
    Opponents may be averaging 41 passing attempts per game, but Ohio State leads the Big Ten with 10 pass interceptions. It also ranks sixth in the league in pass efficiency defense. And three players – Bradley Roby, Travis Howard and Orhian Johnson – rank among the Top 10 DBs in the league in passes defended and interceptions. A fourth OSU DB – Christian Bryant – ranks in the Top 20 with 6.8 tackles per game.

    Buck Stoppers (Big Ten rank)…
    Bradley Roby – 11 passes defended (1st); 2 INTs (T2nd);
    Travis Howard – 3 INTs (1st); 7 passes defended (8th); and
    Orhian Johnson – 8 passes defended (5th); 2 INTs (T9th)

    INCREDIBLE, EVEN IF OFF BY 10
    Even if this statistic, quickly researched in the press box late Saturday evening during Ohio State’s win over Nebraska, is even 10 or 15 games off, it is still amazing, albeit unofficially: a scan of every game in which Ohio State has scored at least 35 points reveals the Buckeyes to be undefeated in those contests with a record of 271-0-1; the tie coming in a 35-all game in 1978 vs. SMU.

    MORE BIG-TIME STATS
    This can be easily documented and it is official: Coach Urban Meyer’s 11 teams are 25-0 when scoring 50 or more points in a game.

    BUCHANAN NFF S-A SEMIFINALIST
    Senior punter Ben Buchanan is a candidate for the 2012 NFF Scholar-Athlete Award and by virtue, a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. Buchanan graduated cum lauda and with a 3.53 GPA in June with a degree in strategic communications. His resume is full of community service activities and accomplishments and he is a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He was a finalist for the 2011 Weurffel Trophy which goes to the player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

    Corey Brown SETS 15-YEAR BEST
    Corey Brown tied the fourth-best game in Ohio State history with 12 receptions vs. Michigan State. The total was the most in a game for an Ohio State receiver in 15 years, or since David Boston set the school record with 14 vs. Penn State in 1997. Four of Brown’s catches went for drive extending first downs. His 32 receptions through the first five games of the season tied Terry Glenn’s total in 1995 as the most catches through the first five games.

    Top 5 Receiving Games by a Buckeye:
    14 – David Boston at Penn State, 1997
    13 – David Boston at Indiana, 1996

    12 – Corey Brown at Michigan State, 2012
    12 – Billy Anders vs. Washington, 1966
    12 – Bob Grimes vs. Pitt, 1952

    SMITH’S CLUTCH CATCHES
    Sophomore Devin Smith, second on the team with 19 receptions for 351 yards, has made four remarkable catches so far in his career, including three game winners. He averages 18.5 yards per catch this season and 19.5 for his career. His great grabs include:

  • A go-ahead/game-winning, 63-yard reception while streaking down the sideline two weeks ago vs. the Spartans;
  • A one-handed touchdown catch vs. Miami that was the ESPN play of the day;
  • A game-winning, 72-yard touchdown reception with 3:26 to play vs. California; and
  • Calmly hauling in Braxton Miller’s40-yard touchdown for the game-winner with 20 seconds to play against Wisconsin last year.ONLY TWO WITH BETTER STARTS
    Only two first-year Ohio State coaches have started a season better than Urban Meyer’s 6-0 start to the season: Carol Widdoes went 9-0 in 1944 and eventually won his first 12 games before his first loss; and Earle Bruce opened 11-0 in 1979.MEYER TEAMS: 54 BLOCKED KICKS
    Urban Meyer-coached teams, from 2001 to the present, have now blocked 54 kicks in 131 games. Three of those have come this year as Orhian Johnson and Adolphus Washington have blocked extra point attempts and Bradley Roby blocked a punt – assist to the bull rush up the middle by Steve Miller – vs. Michigan State. (Source for the first 51 blocks: University of Florida stats)SINCE 2005: 17-0 WHEN BLOCKING A PUNT
    Urban Meyer’s six Florida teams blocked a total of 21 punts, and they were 16-0 in those games. His teams are now 17-0 when blocking a punt since the start of the 2005 season.15 70-YARD DRIVES (AT LEAST) THIS SEASON
