Urban Meyer FAMU Press Conference recap

Here were the highlights of Meyer’s weekly press conference via SB Nation:

  • Champions on defense: Christian Bryant and Joey Bosa. Bosa was the defensive player of the game.
  • Champions on offense: Jack Mewhort, Marcus Hall, Taylor Decker, Jeff Heureman, Evan Spencer, Jordan Hall, Philly Brown, Devin Smith, Chris Fields, Kenny Guiton. Guiton also offensive player of the game.
  • Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown special teams player of the game.
  • Evan Spencer had “one of the greatest games I’ve seen from a receiver, from a blocking standpoint”.
  • On Florida A&M;: “Can’t overlook a team that has great athletes”.
  • Meyer on status of QB situation says that Braxton still has a lot of work to do, if healthy, will start against Florida A&M.;
  • Carlos Hyde has “been taking care of everything in the classroom and on the practice field”.
  • Jordan Hall has “earned his touches” according to Meyer, even with Hyde back this week.
  • Meyer said that Shazier’s missed tackles, and that could have hurt his defensive grading
  • Meyer mentioned that he counted “16 missed tackles”. Wants to get to single digits.
  • When asked if the A&M; game isn’t very fun to coach, Meyer responded “It can’t be very fun for a team that’s 21-point underdogs, either”.
  • Meyer says Kenny Guiton has “earned some time” because the competition for quarterback has been great.
  • More on Guiton: “Guiton excels at the option/read-option. He’s a natural distributor”. Says Braxton not as natural at pitching.
  • On if Braxton will sit again: “I don’t think so. I would list Braxton as probable.” Says he sees Miller starting.
  • Miller wanted to play on Saturday against Cal, but understood when Meyer told him it wasn’t smart to play.
  • Meyer says he wants to get the best 11 on the field, could potentially be two quarterbacks at one time.
  • “One of the most interesting case studies. If you buy stock, buy stock in Kenny Guiton”
  • Meyer on defensive line depth: “One of our guys (Washington) goes down and we’re still able to keep a rotation going” mentions great recruiting from Vrabel
  • Adolphus Washington is questionable this week, Tommy Schutt is out until around mid-year.
