Record setter’s 465 yards are no surprise to coach

The NCAA’s all-division rushing record stood for 17 years before Octavias McKoy broke it last month. His record lasted just 21 days.Cartel Brooks of Division III Heidelberg University ran for 465 yards in his team’s 42-14 win over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday to better the 455 by D-III Western Connecticut State’s McKoy against Worcester State on Oct. 26.Brooks set school records with 336 yards and five touchdowns against Otterbein last month before having his really big day against Baldwin Wallace. He carried 38 times and scored on runs of 81, 41 and 13 yards. He finished the season with a school-record 1,704 yards.”When we recruited him, did we expect him to be able to do something like this? Probably,” Heidelberg coach Mike Hallett said. ”The wind was a little tricky, so (Saturday) turned into more of a ‘ground-and-pound’ game. We felt like Cartel was going to do some good things, and he did.”The 5-foot-8, 195-pound junior from Mansfield, Ohio, said he wanted to be at his best against Baldwin Wallace.”This could be our last game,” Brooks said, ”so we wanted to play well for our seniors. I just followed my blocks.”FAST-STARTING BUCKEYES: No one starts games better than Ohio State, which has amassed 192 first-quarter points. Former record-holder Jimmy Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg had 16,064 total yards from 2003-06.WILLIAMS RUNS WILD AGAIN: Boston College’s Andre Williams has a big lead in the national rushing race after a second straight huge game. He followed a 295-yard outing against New Mexico State with a 339-yard day against North Carolina State. His per-game average has ballooned from 147 yards two weeks ago to 181. He’s gone over 200 yards four times.AROUND THE COUNTRY: North Carolina’s Ryan Switzer ran back two punts for touchdowns against Pittsburgh a week after returning one for a TD against Virginia. His three returns for TDs lead the nation, with his 61-yarder in the fourth quarter producing a 34-27 victory over Pitt … Oregon State’s Brandin Cooks reached 100 catches for the season against Arizona State. His 144 yards receiving per game also rank first … Here’s just one of Kentucky’s many problems this season: the Wildcats have intercepted one pass. That’s the fewest of any FBS team. Linebacker Josh Forest had the pick in the third quarter against Florida on Sept. 28. That was 182 pass attempts ago.
