Ohio State Football Recruiting: Why Ben Edwards Commitment Is Huge Get

Ohio State’s 2015 recruiting class received a huge boost when Ben Edwards, a 3-star safety out of Jacksonville, Fla., announced his verbal commitment to the Buckeyes Thursday afternoon.

The 6’0″, 196-pound standout had offers from schools such as Auburn, Louisville, Missouri, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford, and just as his recruitment was heating up, Edwards was ready to end it.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes extended an offer on January 20, but according to Ari Wasserman of The Plain Dealer, Edwards has known for a while that Ohio State was his final destination.

I have known for a while that I was going to commit to Ohio State. They have been wanting me to commit since the day they offered me, and I just have been talking to Coach (Tim) Hinton and Coach (Chris) Ash, and they loved me. Ohio State is the place for me, so I went all-in and committed.

Edwards, ranked the No. 20 safety in the country and the No. 43 overall prospect in Florida, becomes the third member of the 2015 class, joining 4-star cornerbacks Eric Glover-Williams and Jamel Dean. Meyer is clearly making an effort to stock up on talented defensive backs, which is exactly what he’s getting with his latest commitment.

Edwards is one of the hardest-hitting safeties in the country, and at 6’0″, he’s a rangy athlete who makes outstanding plays in the back end of the defense. He closes fast, has good instincts and is fearless in run support.
