Virginia Tech vs. Ohio State: Hokies pull off 35-21 upset over No. 8 Buckeyes

About two hours before kickoff Saturday night, Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer went straight from the team bus to the south end zone at Ohio Stadium. Still wearing a blue sport coat and tie, he gazed up at the rows of empty bleachers and watched the Buckeyes walk to their locker room. He looked down the sideline where NBA superstar LeBron James and his entourage would soon congregate.

Over the course of 28 seasons and 225 career wins at Virginia Tech, Beamer had never been to this college football cathedral before. By the time he walked off the field just before midnight, his first trip to Ohio State had become a memorable one.

The Hokies left the largest crowd ever to attend a game at Ohio Stadium in stunned silence, pulling off a 35-21 upset over the eighth-ranked Buckeyes that might just be the best road win in program history. The victory, on the heels of two straight disappointing seasons at Virginia Tech, catapulted Beamer and company back into the national conversation and ended Ohio State’s 25-game regular season win streak under Coach Urban Meyer.

It’s just the fourth time the Hokies have beaten a top 10 team away from Lane Stadium and their first nonconference road win over a top-10 foe since a 12-10 triumph at No. 9 West Virginia in 1989.

“I think this is a big, big win for our program, for the status of our program,” Beamer said.
