COLUMBUS, Ohio — Like most young children, Jacoby Boren had an irrational fear of basements. It’s dark. It’s cold. It’s quiet. There could be monsters down there. His older brothers knew that. So what better way to put your rambunctious 5-year-old little brother in his place than by locking him in the basement, putting on scary masks and leaving him with an emotionally scarring moment that he’ll be able to recall 20 years later? Boren was that rambunctious child, though he may have been 6 or 7 years old at the time (neither he nor his brothers could quite remember). His older brothers, Justin and Zach, were supposed to be babysitting the youngest Boren with their parents out of the house.
