Not Jared Sullinger or Trey Burke, Ohio State basketball target Seth Towns on own path: Buckeyes recruiting

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Seth Towns can’t avoid it. Every time he makes the short walk from the boys basketball locker room to the gym at Columbus Northland High School, he has to pass under a poster of Trey Burke. That poster of Burke — the Northland grad, former Naismith Player of the Year at Michigan and current Utah Jazz guard — hangs on the left side of the scoreboard. On the right side is a poster of Jared Sullinger. That poster of Sullinger — the Northland grad, former National Freshman of the Year at Ohio State and current Boston Celtics forward — hangs on the opposite end of the floor from a banner commemorating the state championship Sullinger and Burke won in 2009. Talk about pressure. The Vikings have sent seven players to play Division I basketball since 2008, none as good nor as famous as Burke and Sullinger. The alma maters of each former Northland star are in pursuit of Towns. “People tell me don’t follow Trey’s path and go to Michigan, but that’s mostly Columbus natives who want me to go to Ohio State,” Towns told cleveland.com in an interview at Northland on Wednesday. “So then it’s like, ‘Oh, you want me to follow Jared’s path?’ I get a lot of influence.” Towns would rather carve his own path. He picked up an offer from Ohio State on Nov. 1 while on an unofficial visit during which he sat on the end of the bench during the Buckeyes’ Scarlet and Gray scrimmage at Value City Arena. He also visited for the Buckeyes’ win over Marquette this week. Michigan has been on Towns longer, offering him a scholarship in June. …
