COLUMBUS, Ohio β€” Statistically speaking, Ohio State’s offense cooled off a bit. Only because the Buckeyes shot the ball so well in their first two games this season. But they’ll take the 57 percent they shot from the floor against Sacred Heart on Sunday, because it was plenty good enough for a 106-48 win over the Pioneers in Value City Arena. Buckeyes freshman guard D’Angelo Russell poured in 32 points, coming up eight shy of the Ohio State freshman record of 40 set by Jared Sullinger. Russell added nine rebounds and five assists. The smooth freshman scored 11 straight points early in the second half to give the Buckeyes a 71-31 lead. Shannon Scott set an Ohio State record with 16 assists. Ohio State (3-0) came into the day leading the nation in field goal percentage at 63.3 percent after wins over UMass-Lowell and Marquette. The Buckeyes weren’t quite that good on Sunday, a cold start made sure of that, but that it didn’t matter against an overmatched Sacred Heart (1-2). The Pioneers couldn’t handle the Buckeyes’ length, and even when they got inside the Ohio State zone, they couldn’t finish around the rim. Sacred Heard didn’t get a field goal inside the 3-point arc until the 6:41 mark of the first half. By that time Ohio State already led by 11.
