Ohio State wins last spot in College Football Playoff field

Ohio State looked good enough.  After the Buckeyes thrashed Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten title game Saturday behind third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, the College Football Playoff committee selected the Buckeyes as the No. 4 seed in the inaugural four-team playoff Sunday. Alabama was No. 1, Oregon was No. 2 and Florida State was No. 3. Alabama will face the Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl while Florida State will square off against Oregon in the Rose Bowl, both on New Year’s Day.  It’s a bad day for the Big 12, which crowned a dual conference champion Saturday in TCU and Baylor and may have cost itself by not having an outright conference champion or a conference championships game, as the other major conferences have.  Committee chairman Jeff Long confirmed that notion when he told ESPN that a 13th game gave the committee another opportunity to impress the committee and pick up another win over a quality opponent. Long said it was “decisive” for Ohio State to jump into the fourth spot.  “Ohio State’s performance in a 13th game gave them a quality win over a highly-ranked team that allowed them to move into that fourth spot,” Long said. Baylor finished at No. 5 while TCU was No. 6. Baylor had defeated TCU earlier this season, with coach Art Briles saying the Bears were the true Big 12 champion based on that victory…
