Ohio State Beats Oregon to Win First College Football Playoff

Ohio State University beat Oregon 42-20 behind four rushing touchdowns by Ezekiel Elliott in the inaugural College Football Playoff final to give coach Urban Meyer a third national championship to go with the two he won with Florida. The Buckeyes (14-1) got into the playoff after the last week of the season, jumping over Texas Christian in the final poll. As the fourth seed in the four-team playoff bracket, Ohio State knocked off Alabama 42-35 in the semifinals before topping the favored Ducks at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Ohio State ranks fifth at college football’s top level with 863 all-time wins. The school hired Meyer, who won two titles at Florida, in 2011 after a 6-6 season and memorabilia scandal involving football players that led to the resignation of former coach Jim Tressel and a one-year postseason ban. The Buckeyes denied Oregon its first national title while ending the season with 13 consecutive wins. Ohio State also ended the season with its third-string quarterback playing a starring role. Cardale Jones started the final three games after J.T. Barrett, who led the nation with 42 total touchdowns at the time, broke his ankle against Michigan on Nov. 29. Barrett had taken over at the start of the season when Braxton Miller, who was considered a Heisman Trophy contender, suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in August. …
