Ohio State’s Devin Smith making impression at Sr. Bowl workouts

MOBILE, Ala. – Devin Smith can hit home runs. Now, NFL scouts here at the Senior Bowl want to know if the former Ohio State star can also hit a few singles and doubles as well. Smith was the deep threat for the national champion Buckeyes this season, catching on 33 passes, but taking 12 of them for touchdowns. Now, Smith his here at the Senior Bowl with the North Squad trying to show that he can do things like run slants and crosses and dig routes in addition to his signature nine route. Maybe that’s the reason he had jersey No. 9 for the Buckeyes. Smith’s speed and deep threat abilities alone – he has been clocked in the 4.3s – might be enough for some team to throw a second-round pick at him. But he would rather be known as a complete receiver, and that is what he intends to do this week. “(I want to show) that I can only just run all the go routes, but that I can run all the other routes,” Smith said. “I think that’s very imperative for me to show that I can run all the other routes and that I can block and do all the necessary things that a wide receiver has to do.” Smith knows what is at hand and has faith in himself that he can do whatever is asked. But he said he knows he will have to improve other areas of his game – like blocking downfield. “I know I can run all the other routes, the intermediate routes and things like that, it’s just a matter of me showing it to these coaches,” Smith said. “One area I need to work on is blocking. …
