Quick Take: Kentucky rolls, Ohio State falters, and Roy Williams would like college kids to know their hoops history

(AP Photo/Gerry Broome) It was a relatively pedestrian slate of college hoops games this weekend, so we forgive you if you skipped them to shovel snow, spread rock salt across your driveway, or frantically research Academy Award nominees for Oscar pool prediction purposes. Here’s what you missed: Weekend impact: Contenders rise, pretenders fade. In a weekend devoid of premier matchups — West Virginia’s win over Oklahoma State was the only game featuring two top 25 teams — a few top teams notched wins to keep pace in the race for No. 1 seeds behind Kentucky, while two teams who not long ago looked on the edge of that top echelon continued to head in the wrong direction as the regular season draws to a close. Kentucky continued to roll toward an unbeaten regular season with a rout of Auburn, while Gonzaga, Duke, Wisconsin, Villanova, Arizona and Kansas all topped overmatched opponents. Louisville continued to look like a team sliding into March, as the Cardinals narrowly beat Miami to avoid a third straight loss, then announced the Chris Jones saga will end with his dismissal. Ohio State, another squad that looked to be surging just a few weeks ago, followed a tough loss at Michigan State with a disappointing performance at Michigan that likely will drop the Buckeyes from the top 25. Oregon got a much-needed upset win over Utah to boost the Ducks’ tournament chances. North Carolina provided the feel-good moment of the weekend when it rolled out the four corners offense as a tribute to the late Dean Smith for its first basket in Saturday’s rout of Georgia Tech, then Roy Williams stomped all over those good vibes in the postgame news conference by complaining not enough fans noticed. (It’s unclear if anyone pointed out to Williams the four corners went out of style roughly a decade before most UNC undergrads were born.) Most notable upset: Michigan over Ohio State. …
