Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer says Cleveland Browns are 'fantastic' in doing due diligence on draft prospects

BEREA, Ohio — Buckeyes football coach Urban Meyer said not all NFL teams do equal amounts of due diligence when scouting a prospect for the draft. He’s had players selected over his 15 years as a college head coach when nobody from the franchise contacted him seeking insight or background information. “Some organizations do a phenomenal job, A to Z, upside down, inside out, and they ask those questions,” Meyer said Tuesday. “To be quite honest with you there are some (teams) who draft one of your players and you never hear from them. You say, ‘How did they get information on this kid?’ Those are also ones that don’t win a bunch of games, either.” A month before this year’s draft, the Buckeyes coach offered high praise to the Browns and coach Mike Pettine for their thoroughness. “Not good, fantastic,” Meyer said when asked specifically about the Browns. “I really like their head coach. He’s knee deep in it.” Meyer’s strong endorsement perhaps raises questions considering the Browns’ decision to draft Johnny Manziel, red flags and all, out of Texas A&M a year ago. The quarterback has been in rehab since late January for possible substance abuse issues following a disappointing rookie season on and off the field. Pettine, who said the organization was “comfortable” with information collected on Manziel prior to the draft, hopes to have him back in Berea for the start of team workouts on April 20. The Browns have beefed up their scouting department since last May — three months before General Manager Ray Farmer was hired. The club didn’t draft any Buckeyes last year and hasn’t selected one since taking receiver Brian Robiskie in 2009.
