NFL draft: Jeff Heuerman convinced Broncos, Elway he’s the right man

The Denver Broncos making Ohio State tight end Jeff Heuerman a late third-round pick Friday night is a textbook example of how the NFL draft really works, and of how draftee wannabes should play that game.

It’s not about picking in descending order the top prospects based purely on popularity and/or talent. It’s about a team having needs, in descending order, and a prospect convincing a particular team he can fill a need better than someone else at his position. That’s what Heuerman and his representatives did with the Broncos.

“He was the top guy on our board at the time,” Broncos president and former Super Bowls-winning quarterback John Elway explained late Friday night after he and Gary Kubiak gave Heuerman the call.
