Brotherly Love: Spencer Got Special Call During Draft

Knowing he may or may not have been picked, Spencer was watching the early portion of the sixth round of the draft when his phone rang. It was his brother. It just so happens that Spencer’s older brother, Cole, is an area scout for the NFL’s Washington Redskins. As you now know, Evan Spencer was selected by the Redskins in the sixth round of the draft (No. 187 overall). And, yes, he got that good news a few moments before his name and highlight reel popped up on the screen, courtesy of his brother. “They will usually call you a pick or two before it happens,” Spencer said. “I was sitting on the couch and just watching it and waiting and hoping it would happen soon. I saw a couple picks it might be. “My brother is a regional scout for the Redskins. My phone rings and I see it’s a number from Virginia. I’m thinking hopefully, maybe this is it. I’m hoping it’s not just Cole calling me to see how I was doing. “I picked up the phone and said, ‘This is Evan.’ He said, ‘This is Cole … he’s like, we’re about to pick you with the next pick.’ “I was like, ‘Shut up, no you’re not.’ He said, ‘Yes, we are with the next pick in the sixth.’ I can’t really tell you what I said next. I talked to Coach (Jay) Gruden and we had a good talk. …
