From football to a medical touchdown

By Jarrod Smalley, NBC4i Columbus Published: May 21, 2015, 7:41 pm Updated: May 21, 2015, 7:41 pm COLUMBUS, Ohio (NBCi4) – Simon Fraser was a captain on the Buckeyes football team when Ohio State beat Miami in the BCS national championship game back in January of 2003. After a brief NFL career and a life changing experience, Fraser has now accomplished something even more. “It’s been something we’ve been looking forward since the day these kids were born.” Brinn Fraser loves the microphone, but he will share it with his twin sister Mia. It’s the home life Simon Fraser has always wanted. Simon played four nfl seasons including 3 with the browns but in 2009 simon saw a different direction for his future. “I was at a crossroads in my own career. I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do,” said Fraser. That was the year Brinn and Mia were born at 26 weeks. A ruptured amniotic sack caused Brinn some life threatening complications. At first the Frasers were told Brinn may not survive. It led to a career for Simon. “I remember being on the elevator with my wife at 1 o’clock in the morning after spending the whole day in the NICU, telling her I think I’m going to quit football and go into medicine. She told me we need to go home get some sleep and think about it. Just seeing the care and compassion that they had for our kids and just what they were able to do medically literally saved Brinn’s life and it really hit me in the heart and I felt like this is where my calling was. this is what i wanted to do.” As Brinn and Mia grew and came home, Simon got serious about his new dream he was accepted into Ohio University in 2011 and he lived in Athens during the week, then commuted home on the weekends meaning mom, Mallory run the house often solo. “The sacrifice that she had to make along this journey words can’t even explain how grateful I am for everything she’s done.” Four years of devoted study led to May 9th when daddy became doctor. Like the old Woody Hayes saying, “You never can pay back, but you can pay forward” and I’m always reminded everyday when I come home that the two kids are the reason i went into it.
