Ohio State football: Urban Meyer faces difficult QB decision

Prior to the 2014-15 college football season, Ohio State football was a top-five team destined for failure.  But the name Cardale Jones, not known to many became the Buckeye savior. Having a reputation for a tweet he posted about how to college classes was pointless, the redshirt sophomore who was third on the depth chart at quarterback, had seen 19 total snaps on the field. One season later, Jones is projected to be a possible first round draft pick come next year. But for now, he and coach Urban Meyer are considered the best quarterback-coach duo. But is it fair to call Jones and Meyer the best “duo” in college football? After all, Jones has started only three games at OSU. And with the starting quarterback position still up for grabs, both quarterbacks Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett will be set to compete this summer for it, once they rehab from their respective surgeries. With his three starts coming in the Big Ten Championship, Sugar Bowl and National Championship games, Jones has never started or played in a full college football regular season. He’s a talented football player. His performances have proven that. But even so, the most talented players make mistakes on the field. The offense Meyer runs has been ‘quarterback friendly’, wherever he’s coached. With an overall record of 141-26, an argument could be made that the system has made Jones a better player than he truly is. If Jones were to win the pending three-way quarterback battle, he will need to make improvements on the mistakes he made in the final three games of the season. And making improvements are something he still needs to make based on his performance in the 2015 spring game. “For the spring, I’d give him a very good spring,” Meyer said after the game…
