. DESTIN, FLA. – New Orleans is looking to get back in the college football championship game business. The city will bid for the College Football Playoff championship games in 2019 and 2020, Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan confirmed here Wednesday during the Southeastern Conference Spring Meeting. CFP leaders will announce the cities bidding for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 games here at a 5 p.m. news conference.New Orleans can not bid for the 2018 championship game because the Sugar Bowl is hosting a CFP semifinal. CFP rules prohibit cities from hosting semifinals and finals in the same year. Two years ago, New Orleans bid for the 2016 and 2017 championship games but lost out to Glendale, Arizona (near Phoenix), and Tampa, Florida, respectively. Tuesday, however, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law a bill which says the state will pay for up to 30 percent of the cost of bidding for a major sporting event from anticipated extra sales tax revenue. New Orleans has also been invited to bid for the 2019 and 2020 Super Bowls. It’s unlikely the city would be able to host both in the same year.
