Ohio State fans rejoice: Mark May is off ESPN show

ESPN’s Mark May is leaving “College Football Final.”(Photo: ESPN) The enemy of our enemy is our friend, right? So take the news with a grain of salt that Mark May is out in ESPN’s retooling of its “College Football Final” crew. Or, as the headline puts it at elevenwarriors.com, a Buckeyes fan site: “Bon voyage, Mark May: Bidding adieu to Ohio State’s most notorious troll.” Or, as @OSUBuckeyes4Life tweeted: “Hahahaha.” And not only is May out, the new crew includes former OSU wide receiver Joey Galloway, so it’s a win-win in Columbus. Galloway will work with new host Adam Virk and former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell. The show had been hosted by Rece Davis, who’s taking over “College GameDay,” along with analysts May and Lou Holtz, who retired in April “by mutual agreement.” • Related: Follow Schrader’s sports oddities in the Ticker John Ourand of SportsBusiness Journal reports “May, who has been with the show since 2001, is moving to another college-focused studio show with host John Saunders and former Texas coach Mack Brown.” OSU fans long have thought that May, a College Football Hall of Famer who played at Pitt, is anti-Buckeye. There’s even a “Buckeye Fans Who Can’t Stand Mark May” Facebook page. For example, during the run-up to the selection of last season’s College Football Playoff field, May said the eventual-champion Buckeyes shouldn’t be in it (via nbcsports.com): “You cannot put them in the top four, they’re not worthy. That’s no disrespect to that football team.” That one even prompted OSU coach Urban Meyer to get fans at a pep rally to chant “We are worthy!” for a video to send to May (see below).
