A healthy Braxton Miller reenters the Ohio State QB mix

You may have heard by now Ohio State has quite a stockpile of quarterbacks to work with in Columbus. Many assumed at least one option would pursue a transfer option for this upcoming season because the field is so crowded, but Braxton Miller has defied some odds and has continued to stay committed to the Buckeyes when thought to be the odd man out. Now he appears to be ready to really put a wrinkle in the quarterback conversation this summer because he has been medically cleared to participate in football activities. Alex Gleitman of 247 Sports, citing sources close to the Buckeyes, is reporting today Miller has been given the all-systems-go from medical personnel to begin working out. It is the first time Miller has had this chance since undergoing surgery just prior to the start of the 2014 season. Miller was hyped as a Heisman Trophy candidate before the start of the season but ended up missing the entire year as he went through rehab on his throwing shoulder, which was apparently banged up in Ohio State’s Orange Bowl loss to Clemson the previous January. You all know what happened next for Ohio State. Miller was replaced by J.T. Barrett, who helped carry the Buckeyes to a 11-1 regular season before an injury to his ankle led to Cardale Jones taking over for the Ohio State postseason championship run. Miller passed for 2,094 yards and 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2013. He also rushed for 1,068 yards and 12 touchdowns. Miller led the Buckeyes in rushing the previous season with 1,271 yards and 13 touchdowns to go with his 2,039 yards and 15 touchdowns. When healthy, Miller is capable of being a valuable weapon for Ohio State. The workload will not be as heavy in 2015 for whichever quarterback is leading the offense, because Ezekiel Elliott emerged late last season to prove more than capable of carrying the football and offense. Which of the three quarterback ends up winning the starting nod from Urban Meyer Labor Day weekend when the Buckeyes travel to Blacksburg, Virgina to avenge their only loss from last season (Virgina Tech) remains to be seen. Who knows, maybe we end up seeing all three? UPDATE (1:11 p.m.) – Or does he? Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch has a contrasting report saying there has been no change in Miller’s status as of yet. Follow @KevinOnCFB Share this:
