Urban Meyer says Ohio State will ‘forever’ recruit the state of Michigan

ANN ARBOR — The first time Urban Meyer ventured into Detroit’s biggest offseason football recruiting camp, his stay was rather brief. Meyer was a late addition to the Sound Mind Sound Body camp in 2012, his first summer as Ohio State’s head coach. He spoke briefly to the campers. Ate ribs with former Michigan coach Brady Hoke and was then on his way. Things have changed over the past three years. Meyer was back in Detroit on Friday for the Sound Mind Sound Body camp outside Detroit, and his presence wasn’t a simple drop-in. As he did in 2013 and 2014, Meyer brought most of his coaching staff to the camp, as the Buckeyes continue to heavily pursue a number of Detroit’s top players. “We go where good players are,” Meyer said. “There’s excellent players up here.” Meyer’s success on the recruiting trail in Detroit began in 2014 when he was able to infiltrate Detroit Cass Tech — a traditional Michigan pipeline — to grab four-star receiver Damon Webb, the state’s No. 2-ranked player. In 2015, he did it again, snagging (and then hanging onto) former Michigan commit, and Cass Tech running back, Mike Weber, also the state’s No. 2-ranked player. Weber’s situation created a bit of a stir after signing day in February when he publicly expressed displeasure with the staff after running backs coach Stan Drayton left the program the following day. Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher wasn’t happy at the time either, but most of those issues seemed to smooth themselves out, as Weber is still headed to Ohio State and Meyer and his staff are still completely welcome at Cass. In 2016, Meyer and Ohio State already have a commit from four-star offensive tackle Michael Jordan (from Canton) and they’re heavily pursuing five-star 2017 receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, the top in-state player in his class. “It’s an area I got to know during my Bowling Green days, and then I hired (assistant coach Kerry) Combs and he doesn’t do a good job, he does a great job.” Meyer added…
