Asmussen: Buckeyes a tough nut to crack

Other Related Content Matt Wilhelm hopes history doesn’t repeat in Columbus.Back in 2002, Wilhelm was a starting linebacker for Jim Tressel’s surprise national champions. The first 14-0 school in I-A history, Ohio State was at the top of college football with no end in sight.Until the next season. Allegations of academic fraud against star running back Maurice Clarett were only the start. Clarett was suspended for the 2003 season for filing a false police report and for receiving improper benefits. He eventually left the school and petitioned to be part of the NFL draft.A real mess. Tressel kept winning games at Ohio State but was never able to match 2002. And Tattoogate forced his resignation in May 2011.Here we are four years later. And Ohio State is in position to build another football dynasty. One that could rival the great schools in the SEC, Miami in its glory days or even Oklahoma back in the 1950s.Urban Meyer has it all set up. Three top quarterbacks who could all lead teams to the playoffs, a star running back, a star defensive lineman and eager recruits ready to fill in the gaps.“I have a feeling about the program the same way I felt about the program in the hands of Jim Tressel,” Wilhelm said. “Had Jim Tressel not gotten into trouble, he would probably still be the head coach, would probably have another national championship under his belt and would have beaten Michigan multiple times.”Wilhelm has a choice seat to watch his alma mater. He is doing TV and radio work for the Cleveland Browns, airing a daily radio show.Wilhelm is a big fan of Meyer, who came to Ohio State after spending a year at ESPN. Funny how Meyer managed to get himself assigned to Big Ten games. Hmmmm.“They are showing no signs of slowing down simply because they now are recruiting against LSU and Alabama and Auburn and Florida and Florida State for the top class in the country,” Wilhelm said. “We’re winning those battles in many cases on some of those five-star and four-star recruts.”The Buckeyes under Meyer are Tressel 2.0. Without the sweater vest.“Urban Meyer is going to continue to win and be the pride and joy of Ohio and win a lot of football games and national championships here until he chooses to step down and either retire or make the jump to the NFL. It won’t stop unless he leaves.”We are in the latest Golden Age of Ohio State football. One that rivals Woody Hayes and Tressel and far surpasses John Cooper and Earle Bruce.Who is next in the Buckeye line?“That’s probably the biggest question mark,” Wilhelm said. “Urban might want to coach this team for another 10 years. Who is going to be the next guy to take on that legacy.”Top of the classWilhelm isn’t the only one counting on a big season for the Buckeyes.Athlon Sports picks Ohio State No…
