Ohio State football: Why J.T. Barrett has to be Buckeyes’ starting QB in Week 1

Since before Ohio State even completed last season’s national championship run, one question has hovered over the 2015 season: Which of his three standout quarterbacks will Urban Meyer choose as starter?

In those first few months of the offseason, whenever it came up in Mailbags, podcasts or radio interviews, I always gave the same answer: It’s got to be Cardale Jones. How could he possibly tell a guy who led the Buckeyesto Big Ten, playoff semifinal and championship game victories to go back to the bench?

But we’re now five months removed from the confetti raining down at AT&T Stadium, and apparently perspectives change with a little time to reflect.

When Bruce Feldman and I conducted our 2015 college football dream team draft this week, I found myself choosing an Ohio State quarterback — and it wasn’t Jones. Given the luxury of choosing my own fictitious starter (provided he can beat out my other QB pick, TCU’s Trevone Boykin), I ranked J.T. Barrett as the No. 13 overall player on my big board.

So I suppose that means I now think Meyer should pick Barrett, too.
