Ohio State’s season opener at Virginia Tech on Labor Day won’t just serve as a high-profile start to its national title defense, but it will also allow the Buckeyes to check in on their latest commitment for 2016.
Cornerback Wayne Davis, a 4-star prospect from Norfolk, VA, took to Twitter on Thursday to announce he’d chosen OSU over Michigan and Virginia Tech:
Davis had more than 20 scholarship offers, most recently picking up ones from Maryland and Michigan State. He’d also attended a camp at Penn State on June 20, two days after naming his final three.
The 5’11”, 187-pound Davis is rated by 247Sports as the No. 360 overall player in the 2016 recruiting class. He’s considered the No. 29 cornerback in the nation and eighth-best prospect in Virginia. He’s the second corner the Buckeyes have landed for 2016, along with 3-star Baltimore pledge Kareem Felder.
JC Shurbutt of 247Sports has compared Davis to current Florida defensive back Brian Poole, a senior who led the Gators’ talented secondary with four interceptions last season.
Davis has been a star since his freshman year at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, the same school that produced OSU sophomore defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes.
