The Buckeyes were playing the No. 1 Crimson Tide deep in SEC country. Junior quarterback Cardale Jones was making just the second start of his career. And it didn’t work out too well the last time the Buckeyes played for a national title in the Superdome, losing to LSU, 38-24, in the BCS title game in 2008. But the fourth-seeded Buckeyes overcame the obstacles to upset Alabama, 42-35, in the Allstate Sugar Bowl to earn the right to play Oregon for the national title, which Ohio State eventually won. Jones, who began the season as the Buckeyes’ third-string quarterback, started out shaky but calmed down enough to lead a spirited comeback from a 21-6 deficit in the second quarter.
