What suspensions mean for Ohio State’s opener vs. Virginia Tech

CHICAGO – Ohio State suspended defensive end Joey Bosa, receiver Corey Smith and H-backs Jalin Marshall and Dontre Wilson on Thursday about an hour before Big Ten Media Days began. All four players will miss the Sept. 7 at Virginia Tech because of a violation of team rules. Here are four ways those suspensions affect the opener: MORE: SN Preseason Top 25 | Top 50 players post-spring | Coaches Poll Ohio State loses its pass rusher: Bosa, an All-American defensive end with 21 sacks the last two seasons, is by far the biggest loss. He’s the best defensive linemen in college football. He had 1.5 sacks against the Hokies last season. Sam Hubbard or Darius Slade, both redshirt freshmen, will likely rotate opposite redshirt sophomore Tyquan Lewis. Miller’s move makes more sense: Braxton Miller’s potential move to H-back is a logical move for the Buckeyes, at least for the first game. Jalin Marshall and Dontre Wilson averaged 5.8 and 5.6 yards per carry, respectively. Curtis Samuel can fill that role, but putting Miller in this spot is all that more tempting.
