Ohio State made big waves during the last college football dead period before the start of training camps Monday when the football team announced the suspension of four players, including All-American defensive end Joey Bosa, for the Buckeye’s season opener against Virginia Tech on Sept. 7. In addition to Bosa, H-backs Jalin Marshall and Dontre Wilson, and wide receiver Corey Smith will be held out of the opener for Ohio State, which won the inaugural College Football Playoff in January with a victory 42-30 victory against Oregon in the national championship game. The Buckeyes took home the top spot in the first USA TODAY coaches poll rankings released last week and are a favorite to defend their title in 2016. Ohio State offered little in the way of further detail when announcing the suspensions, saying the four players had been found in violation of the school’s athletic department policy. But according to an ESPN report, “the the suspensions were due to either marijuana or academics. Head coach Urban Meyer, who met with media members at Big Ten football football media day in Chicago Thursday, addressed the decision to suspend some of his most important players right before the start of camp. “It’s a college mistake, whether it’s social or academic, whatever it is, it’s not a character indictment,” Meyer told MassLive sister-site, Cleveland.com. Meyer said he and his coaching staff had “known about (the suspensions) for a while” and are treating Bosa and the others “with honesty.” “It’s not the first time a program has dealt with stuff,” he continued. “We try to educate and create a culture where stuff is not part of it. It’s been a great summer and great year in a lot of regards.” Losing a player as immensely talented as Bosa – the 6-foot-6, 275-pound end is the son of former NFL first-round draft pick John Bosa and was the No. 1 pick in Mel Kiper’s first 2016 mock draft released in May – would be a blow to any team, even just for one game…
