So how close is the competition in Ohio State’s quarterback race? It took a coin flip to decide who would run with the first team in the first practice of August camp.

The defending national champion Buckeyes opened practice Monday and Cardale Jones won the coin flip, calling heads, according to this story from ESPN.com’s Austin Ward. Don’t look for Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer to announce a starter, either Jones or J.T. Barrett, until Ohio State’s season opener against Virginia Tech on Sept. 5.

Have college football rivalries lost their luster? ESPN.com’s Ivan Maisel says they may have, noting Baylor and TCU really don’t have any rivals. Baylor coach Art Briles says it’s a function of the new playoff system. But, come on, when Alabama-Auburn, UCLA-USC and Michigan-Ohio State play, it’s still big no matter what is on the line.
