Ohio State Football position preview: Wide receivers

Ohio State football entered 2015 camp loaded with offensive weapons and with expectations of greatness in the new season. While many expected most of the controversies to lie under center, recent announcements and player developments have made the receiver position an interesting competition to watch. Missing Pieces Marshall’s 499 receiving yards were third-best on last year’s national championship squad. He also rushed for 154 yards in just 25 attempts. Ahead of Big Ten Media Days just a few weeks ago, Ohio State announced the suspensions of four Buckeye football players, including three wide receivers. Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson, and Cory Smith were all sidelined for the season opener against Virginia Tech. Marshall, Wilson, and Smith are the Buckeye’s second, third, and fourth leading receivers respectively, leaving Mike Thomas as the only returning receiver available for the first game of the season. Luckily, these suspensions will only hinder Ohio State for one game, but the Virginia Tech opener is one of the Buckeye’s toughest challenges of the season. Thomas had 54 receptions for 799 yards and 9 touchdowns last season as the second option behind Devin Smith. Thomas, nephew of former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, is by far the most developed and dependable receiver on the Buckeye’s roster. He’ll now lead a young receiving core that faces a tough test in their first outing. …
