As the college football season approaches, the narratives of Michigan’s two Big Ten teams are currently worlds apart:

?Michigan isn’t in any preseason top 25. The Spartans are in the top 10 in virtually every single one.

?The Spartans are reloading. The Wolverines are rebuilding.

?The Wolverines are hoping their hire of coach Jim Harbaugh will be the key to lead to their rise back to respectability. The Spartans are making internal coaching promotions to replace defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, who was hired away to lead Pittsburgh.

Although the programs are pretty far apart right now, the success of the Michigan football team this year could have a significant impact on the postseason hopes of MSU.

Yes, the success of the Michigan football team this year could have a significant impact on the postseason hopes of MSU.

Assuming the Spartans beat U-M in Ann Arbor this fall, it would be best for MSU’s College Football Playoff hopes if the Wolverines have some success under Harbaugh.

If MSU stumbles in one of its games this year against last year’s national championship game participants (at Ohio State, home vs Oregon), the Spartans would presumably be jumbled with multiple other football teams hoping for an invitation into the football Final Four field.
