College report 8/22/15: Paul dismissed from Illini basketball team

Following his second alcohol-related arrest in two years, Darius Paul has been kicked off the University of Illinois men’s basketball team. Paul was arrested and charged with vandalism, public intoxication and resisting arrest last week while the Illini team was on an exhibition tour of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. John Groce issued this two-sentence statement Friday night: “After further review of the situation, Darius has been dismissed from our team,” Groce said. “Although his playing days here are over, we are committed to helping him move forward.” Paul was suspended for the entire 2014-15 season after he failed two drug tests for marijuana use and was charged with underage drinking and resisting arrest in April 2014. Paul redshirted and sat out the 2013-14 season after he transferred from Western Michigan. Since he didn’t want to miss another season, he played at Lamar State College-Port Arthur in Texas, where he averaged 17.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game before transferring back to Illinois. The university also says Champaign County Circuit Court isn’t the proper venue. Conine’s attorney, Joseph Siprut, on Friday accused the university of trying to “deflect responsibility for their misconduct.” Conine claims she was improperly cleared to play in October 2014 after suffering a third concussion in two years at Illinois. She also claims she was left in one game after suffering what proved to be a concussion. The Buckeyes led 4-0 before Rodgers, a sophomore from Normal Community, scored her first career goal on a penalty kick. Theobald, a freshman from Normal West, finished the scoring in the 87th minute off an assist from Brianne Richards. Vanessa Niestrom made two saves for the Redbirds, who opened with a loss for the first time in four years…
