Michigan State Football: Spartans ranked No. 5 in AP Top 25

The Michigan State football team will begin the 2015 season right where it left off in 2014, ranked No. 5 in the first official preseason AP Top 25. This happens to be the highest preseason ranking for MSU since the 1960s — the last time this team won a national title. Head coach Mark Dantonio and the Spartans will hope to dethrone the unanimous No. 1 overall Ohio State Buckeyes on Nov. 21 in Columbus in a rematch of last season’s home loss which happened to be the only Big Ten loss for MSU. This ranking comes as a bit of a surprise to a few people as the Spartans were ranked No. 6 in the Coaches Poll that was released a few weeks ago. It has been well-noted that Michigan State has been underrated for a few years now. Heading into each season, the Spartans usually find themselves behind a couple of teams that haven’t necessarily earned the right to be ranked so high — looking at you, Notre Dame.
