Ohio State Buckeyes become the first unanimous No. 1 team in AP’s preseason poll

(Eric Gay / AP)It’s no secret that Ohio State’s football team is going to be stellar this year and that wasn’t lost on the people who vote in the Associated Press preseason poll. There were no outliers, no contrarians, no regional partisans. The voters made the Buckeyes the first unanimous No. 1 pick in the 65-year history of the preseason poll Sunday afternoon with 61 first-place votes. No other team has gotten more than 97 percent of the preseason vote. As far as an indication of how Ohio State might do, the preseason poll isn’t always a good omen. The Buckeyes were the No. 1 preseason pick in 1998 and 2006 and both times finished second nationally. The last team to win the national title after being ranked first in the preseason poll was USC in 2004 and the Trojans’ championship was vacated because of NCAA rules violations. …
