AP voters, not history, in love with Buckeyes

More on this By Caulton Tudor Raleigh, N.C. — There were only 35 voters and no preseason forecast at all when the Associated Press began its weekly college football poll in 1936. In fact, the first poll of ’36 wasn’t released until Oct. 20. Minnesota went off No. 1 and finished there with a 7-1 record that included a 6-0 loss to Northwestern. Many fans think the AP – and various other weekly ratings – should go back to the format of almost 80 years ago and do away with any sort of preseason national handicapping. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer today might very well be one of those folks, too. When this season’s AP preseason rankings came out over the weekend, Meyer’s defending national champs became the first unanimous preseason pick in AP history.
