The preseason AP poll has been released for college football, rewarding the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes with a No. 1 ranking. This marks the 16th consecutive season that Oklahoma has been ranked in the top 20 in AP’s preseason poll. Stanford is 21st, Arizona is 22nd, Boise State is 23rd, Missouri is 24th and Tennessee is 25th. The Southeastern Conference has the most teams included in the AP’s preseason poll, with eight. The coming season will be the second in the newly installed College Football Playoff system, which pits the nation’s top four teams against each other in a four-team bracket in January. Clemson had a five-year run of being ranked in the preseason and the post season top 25 from 1987-91. Last year’s participants in the inaugural College Football Playoff – Alabama, Oregon and Florida State – join the Buckeyes in the top 10.
