Legendary Ohio State Coach Honored in Zanesville

Fred Taylor Honored Ohio State coaching legend Fred Taylor is one of Zanesvile’s most famous and well-respected sons, and that didn’t happen by accident. “I owe him everything because without him I wouldn’t have had the NBA career that I had,” said former Ohio State star and NBA hall of famer, John Havlicek. “When I went into the pros, I didn’t need to learn anything.” The man who led the Buckeyes to the 1960 national title was honored Thursday night with the commemoration of the Fred Taylor Memorial Gymnasim on the campus of Ohio University-Zanesville. “He would say ‘Why are you doing this?'” hall of fame forward Jerry Lucas said when asked what his late coach would have thought of the reception. “That’s the kind of person Fred was… We should be doing it for him. He was very important… You can’t say much about Fred Taylor without using the word ‘great.'” Five of Taylor’s former players were on hand to remember their coach, and basketball icon Bobby Knight–who was a forward on the championship team–paid his respects with a video message.
