Five college football storylines to watch this year

1. Playoff musical chairs There are only four spots in the College Football playoff, but there are five major conference champions, the best champion of the non-major conferences and Notre Dame all vying for those spots. Last year it was the Big 12 that got shut out of the party, but if Notre Dame gets into the picture, there could be two major conferences on the outside looking in this year. The road leading to the playoff will provide some clarity, but with only four teams getting selected, there will no doubt be some controversy — and that might not be a bad thing given the interest and discussion it generates. 2. SEC falling? When noted Southeastern Conference homer Paul Finebaum says the league “may be a little overrated” this year, it certainly gets the attention of people around the country who have said as much for the past two years. And while the usual suspects — Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU — will all be highly ranked again, there doesn’t appear to be a dominant team.
