Urban’s renewal: Changed Meyer embraces Ohio State’s challenge to repeat

The College Football Playoffs are returning for their second season, with most of the same contenders back for more.

Familiarity has brought contempt in the CFP and not just between old rivals such as Baylor and TCU, who are both expected to slug it out for a playoff spot in year two of the playoffs after narrowly missing it last season.

Ohio State’s amazing run for the playoffs last season and its crowded cast of returning players have provided another element that is only going to make the growing sport of college football that much more fun to follow.

Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes will provide the sport with its ultimate villain after unanimously earning the top ranking in the Associated Press preseason media poll for the first time in history.

Meyer believed the Buckeyes would become contenders for the national championship this season, but arrived to the party a little early with a staggering late-season run. The Buckeyes averaged 47.7 points per game in convincing victories over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon to finish the season.

“I thought it was a year away,” Meyer said after upsetting Oregon for the national title last season in Arlington. “This team wasn’t supposed to do this.”
