Ohio State QB update: ‘There’s a chance they’ll both play’

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said Monday that he won’t announce a starting quarterback until the Buckeyes take the field on Sept. 7 against Virginia Tech and added that there’s “a chance” that both J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones will play in that game. “We’ll announce the starter when the first guy takes the snap,” Meyer said during his Monday news conference, as reported by ESPN. “It’s still very close, both guys are performing very well. “If it was different skill sets, we probably would (need to decide earlier), but they’re not. If you look at J.T.’s game plan when he was our quarterback and Cardale’s, it was very similar. There’s a chance they’ll both play, as well, so that hasn’t really (been a factor) with our mindset with a game plan on offense.” Barrett threw for 2,834 yards and 34 touchdowns and rushed for another 938 yards and 11 scores while leading Ohio State to an 11-1 regular-season record. After he was injured in the regular-season finale against Michigan, Jones came on to lead the Buckeyes to a 59-0 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship games and College Football Playoff victories over Alabama and Oregon to claim the national title. A third member in the competition, 2012 and 2013 Big Ten Player of the Year, Braxton Miller, has moved to receiver, where Meyer said he has been “outstanding” in recent practices.
