Urban Meyer continues to be cagey regarding Ohio State Buckeyes’ starting QB

Updated Aug 31, 2015 at 12:31p ET As expected, Urban Meyer is not ready to name his starting quarterback. The Buckeyes head coach said at his news conference Monday, “We will announce the starter when the first guy takes the snap (against Va. Tech next Monday night). There’s a chance that (Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett) will both play as well.” Meyer also elaborated a little on the prospects of a two-QB system, adding that it “could be in-game or could be weekly.” The Buckeyes QB battle is perhaps the most interesting subplot of the 2015 season. Barrett made a run at the Heisman before going down in the regular-season finale against Michigan. Jones, the bigger guy with one of the strongest arms in all of football, stepped in and led Ohio State to wins over Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon.  The hunch here is that Barrett (who was named a team captain a few days ago) will emerge as this year’s starting QB for the Buckeyes. He’s the best leader Meyer has, he’s accurate, can run, has the best grasp of the offense and he also makes very smart decisions. On Monday morning, Meyer addressed the topic of Barrett being made a captain: “It’s a factor (in the decision of who gets the starting job) but it’s not THE factor,” Meyer said. “The guy who gives us the best chance to get down the field.” Meyer praised both QBs in how they’ve handled things.  “They’re pros. J.T. has always been a pro and I’m amazing at how Cardale has handled himself.”
