Ohio State depth chart lists Barrett, Jones as starters; both will play

Urban Meyer has long promised that no one outside of the Ohio State locker room will know who’ll start under center for the Buckeyes until the moment his offense takes the field against Virginia Tech this Monday. Not surprisingly, the first depth chart released by the Buckeyes this season hasn’t broken that promise. Via 247Sports affiliate Bucknuts.com, that depth chart features J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones listed as co-starters, separated only by the expected “OR.” Their former competitor for the starting job, Braxton Miller, is listed as a co-starter with sophomore Curtis Samuel at the H-back spot. Despite comments from Barrett, Jones and Meyer this fall camp that suggested one quarterback or the other would receive the overwhelming majority of snaps, Meyer has seemed increasingly open this week to both Barrett and Jones seeing meaningful time. He said Monday he’d “like to see both guys involved” and continued in that vein when speaking on the quarterback situation Monday. “I thought it would be [a difficult decision]; it actually has not been,” Meyer said of choosing a starter, per Bucknuts. “I kind of have an idea of who’s going to go early. “But I’ve also made the decision that when you have good players, you play them. I would anticipate throughout the course of the year we’ll play both quarterbacks.” Of course, Meyer can’t exactly go wrong in making this decision; one of these two quarterbacks set a slew of school records on his way to an 11-1 record as a starter and legitimate Heisman candidacy, while the other carved apart Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon on his way to hoisting a national championship trophy.
