Ohio State not a safe bet vs. Virginia Tech in Week 1

Oh, you’re back? Fantastic. When we last met, I was wrapping up a championship run last season as The Post’s top college football handicapper, taking Ohio State to upset Oregon in the title game. And if you’re new to the page, the quest for back-to-back titles will be rooted in a long-standing relationship with underdogs, and the principle that the public can’t be trusted, too often relying on instincts instead of readily available information. Week 1 is littered with uncertainty, with Vegas as clueless as it will be all season, but the Buckeyes appear to be the one team every expert and amateur can agree is the most talented team in the country. Of the multiple powerhouses widely predicted to win consecutive national titles — 1995 Nebraska, 2002 Miami, 2005 USC, 2009 Florida, 2014 Florida State — Ohio State is the first to unanimously be voted No. 1 in the AP preseason poll. The Buckeyes have 14 returning starters, multiple future first-round NFL picks, the best coach in the country (Urban Meyer), a running back (Ezekiel Elliott) favored to win the Heisman Trophy and two proven quarterbacks (J.T. Barrett, Cardale Jones) each also capable of claiming the sport’s most prestigious award. Incredibly, who plays the team’s most important position makes no difference, but what will matter is who else will be watching alongside one of the quarterbacks during Monday night’s season opener at Virginia Tech. …
