Jones starts at QB for Ohio State, throws TD on first drive

Updated Sep 7, 2015 at 10:13p ET BLACKSBURG, Va. — Cardale Jones started at quarterback for No. 1 Ohio State against Virginia Tech and started fast before a couple of his mistakes helped the Hokies get back in the game. College football’s most-talked about quarterback competition came to a conclusion — maybe? — Monday night when Jones went out for Ohio State’s first offensive series. He completed 3 of 4 passes on the drive, right on the money with every throw, including a 24-yard touchdown he lofted off-balance to Curtis Samuel in the end zone. Ezekiel Elliott’s 80-yard TD run made it 14-0 Ohio State and it looked as if the Buckeyes might run away. But Virginia Tech’s defense found some answers and Jones made a few key misfires. The worst came when he flipped a short pass way over the head of a receiver and into the arms of a diving Desmond Frye. The pick set up a Hokies’ field goal that made it 14-10. …
