Cottrill statue celebrates Buckeye mascot Brutus

The sculpture is planned to be placed outside OSU’s Schottenstein Center in time for basketball season.(Photo: Shane Flanigan/Times Recorder) ZANESVILLE — Of the hundreds of original works housed in Alan Cottrill’s sculpture studio in downtown Zanesville, one work in progress has local Ohio State Buckeyes fans in a frenzy of excitement. The Ohio State University commissioned Cottrill to sculpt Brutus, a favorite of Buckeye faithful, as the university celebrates the mascot’s 50th birthday. The seven-foot statue will strike a pose offering an eternal O to go along with thousands of fans’ H’s, I’s and O’s in countless future photos to come. The sculpture will go in front of the Schottenstein Center on Borror Drive in Columbus and will be installed for the start of basketball season. After releasing the news of the Brutus statue on his Facebook page, Cottrill’s phone lit up with notifications from people expressing their excitement. “I do Thomas Edison and get a reasonable response, but people hear I’m doing Brutus,” the sculptor said before trailing off to indicate the overwhelming admiration shown for the Ohio State mascot. Cottrill’s Edison statue was unveiled at the Ohio Statehouse in May and will be placed in Statuary Hall at the United States Capitol in Washington next month. Brutus is the fourth piece Cottrill has done for Ohio State. The artist sculpted famed football coach Woody Hayes to stand in front of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on campus as well as an eight-foot Jesse Owens for the southwest corner of the track and field stadium named in the athlete’s honor.
