No. 1 Ohio State beats Virginia Tech, 42-24

The defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes handled Virginia Tech, beating the Hokies 42-24 Monday, in the season opener for both teams. The Hokies were the only team the Buckeyes lost to last season. Braxton Miller, the quarterback who converted to wide receiver, caught two third-quarter touchdown passes to help the Buckeyes come back after trailing at the half. Cardale Jones got the start at quarterback for the Buckeyes beating out J.T. Barrett. Neither QB knew who was going in until right before the Ohio State’s first offensive play. “Honestly, we both went out in the huddle with the first play,” Jones said, as reported by Andrea Adelson at ESPN.com.  “We didn’t know. I was taking a couple steps to the sideline, and [coach Urban Meyer] was like, ‘No, you’re in.’ When you found out, I found out.” Quarterback Michael Brewer, who led Tech over the Buckeyes last season, rallied the Hokies to a 17-14 halftime lead. After the Buckeyes took a 21-17 lead, Brewer guided the Hokies into Ohio State territory before getting hit and driven to the ground by Ohio State defensive lineman Aldophus Washington. The hit broke broke Brewer’s collarbone and the quarterback will have surgery today and miss four to eight weeks, according to ESPN.com. …
