Western Michigan’s PJ Fleck says year spent as Ohio State football assistant was ‘inspiring’

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Ohio State University football program was in the midst of a dominant stretch of seasons when a young P.J. Fleck joined the staff in 2006. Although Fleck spent only one season as a graduate assistant on the Buckeyes’ staff it seems to have had a lasting impact on Western Michigan’s third-year coach as he still speaks highly of former OSU coach Jim Tressel and the football culture in Columbus, Ohio. “It was inspiring,” Fleck said of his year at OSU, which finished first or tied for first in the Big Ten from 2005-10 and played in a BCS bowl each season. “You’re part of one of the greatest programs of all time, if not the greatest. You’re part of the greatest traditions, greatest rivalries, great games, greatest players, greatest culture and greatest atmosphere. “I remember going in the GA room the first day I got the job and I look in the GA office and every GA or assistant coach that came through Ohio State that became a head coach was on the wall and it was filled top to bottom. I remember sitting there and being like, ‘I want to be on there one day. I want my picture on that wall one day.’ I don’t know if they still have it.
